Q. What grade sand was used as the standard in house solution for those mid to late 80s Games Workshop studio bases? (Painted Goblin Green and drybrushed with Bilious Green)
A. "Bird Cage Sand" was stated as the standard back in the day. Now it comes with shell calcium, lime and flavour additives so it might not be ideal. Fine sand of a grade 0.1mm to 0.3mm will work to produce that studio affect when glued on with PVA.
Q. Trolls and Ogres are listed in Warhammer Armies as requiring 40mmx40mm bases however many were sold with 50mmx50mm bases. Which is correct?
A. 40mmx40mm
Q. Fimir of most types are listed in Warhammer Fantasy Battle as requiring 25mmx25mm bases. Characters on 40mmx40mm bases. All were however supplied with 40mmx40mm bases. Which is correct?
I will dig around, but I am sure I have read either in WD or a WFB book the armies list base sizes are correct and the ones supplied are not the rules official ones.
ReplyDeleteBases supplied were IIRC suggestions rather than what they must go on, though in most cases GW tried to supply the bases as per the army list of the said model.
Though metal hex bases and oval bases from back in the day....
:)

Specifically to Fimir:
DeleteBoth my copies of WFB 3rd edition state that Fimir are on 25x25 bases except hero models which should be on 40x40.
The image shows a model on a 25x25.
(pages 217 and 218).
Both my copies of Warhammer Armies (which of course came out after WFB 3rd edition) states that all Fimir should be on 40x40.
(page 136)
I think this is due to the initial Fimir (at the time of 3rd and before WA) were sculpted by one person. But then later by another person who sculpted them larger.
This resulted in them no longer fitting on 25x25 so they defaulted to the bigger as they were a nice fit and going back to the established fact that members of the same race went on the same size bases, I have not looked through all of WFB 3rd, but I suspect Fimir are/were the only ones that had bigger bases for the hero models.
It was reading the various publications, seeing the differences and then realising even the miniatures themselves were provided with varying base sizes that prompted the question. Great answer 👍
DeleteSand I recall something in WD or maybe a WFB 3rd edition saying to use bird cage sand, which is what I used back in the day.
ReplyDeleteI recall a comment in the article about reusing bird cage sand, but be sure to get the mess out before you do.
I have read the same but it would be great to give an actual gauge. I would assume 0.1 to 0.4mm.
DeleteGW used to sell sand that looked the part but it varied over the years until they stopped a few years back.
Bird cage sand nowadays seems to be full of shell fragments, healthy additives and 'flavoured'... a bit iffy.
DeleteFine sand listed as containing 0.1 to 0.3mm grains is probably a safer bet.
I have been searching through catalogues for the "Fantasy Barn" wheel for over 35 years...
ReplyDeleteSure, any wheel could have sufficed but I really wanted the one the studio used in White Dwarf!
